Oxycodone, the generic name for OxyContin, has been around for a century, first developed in Germany by Bayer as a (hopefully) less addictive replacement for morphine and heroin. Studies show that it was first used in clinical studies in 1917 and approved for sale in the United States in 1939. It’s most common use is to manage severe pain.
Oxycodone is known to have a wide range of side effects. In moderate use, it has often been documented to cause constipation, vomiting, dry mouth, fatigue, itching, sweating, dizziness and nausea. Other reported effects of lower dosages including diarrhea, loss of appetite, abdominal pain and hiccups.
With higher intakes of the drug, users have experience difficulty breathing, sleep apnea, hypotension (low blood pressure), respiratory arrest and even death. Because OxyContin is an opioid, it can also lead to addiction and withdrawal issues.
